Fresh Inspirations! April Newsletter!
Volume III Issue IV - April 2006

Dear Melissa,

Happy Peeps Day, albeit belated! And if you don’t know peeps, you miss an Easter classic. They are those marshmallow bits in the shape of chicks and bunnies coated in sugar in divine shades of grape purple, screaming yellow, and neon pink. You know they are the kid treats we adults love too.

My Mountain Getaway! I enjoyed a relaxing Easter weekend in Highlands, NC. While I was working on a client’s home two years ago up there, I got to know Rick and Helene - the proprietors of the 4 ½ Street Inn. It is now my mountain retreat, and what a treat it is! With marvelous rooms, each an individual escape; Helene’s incredible creative culinary delights for breakfast daily; homemade cookies daily at 3:30; and the camaraderie of evening cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, it doesn’t get any better! Check them out at www.4andahalfstinn.com.

The City of Lights, Unforgettable as Always! Paris was wonderful fun, even if the weather was mostly damp and overcast. I’m saving the details and photos for my next postcard so be sure to stay tuned!

Fresh Inspirations: Truths to Live By

I recently spoke in Milwaukee for the Symphony Orchestra’s annual fundraising luncheon and tabletop setting auction. It was a great event, well attended by many patrons of the arts. Milwaukee has a breathtaking new addition to their art museum, a fascinating architectural history, and perhaps the largest collection of clocks on church towers and more, that I have seen. Knowing that they were interested in my heritage, particularly Frank Lloyd Wright, I created a presentation centered on three life truths. I illustrated these with great grandfather’s life, my godmother, and Mother. They are truths we can all benefit from.

Creating a Unique and Original Life
In order to lead an original and unique life, we do have to think outside of the box and create our own rules and guidelines for accomplishment. The best among us always have done so, and this is one of the lasting legacies of Frank Lloyd Wright. He never played by the rules, but instead established his own path and despite the many naysayers created architecture well ahead of its time. His designs still serve as an inspiration today. Many said he couldn’t do what he in fact did. They said it wouldn’t work, wouldn’t stand the test of time, and would collapse. While many of his projects do undergo extensive renovation, the innovative concepts presented in such properties as Fallingwater and the S.C. Johnson Wax Plant are timeless and blazed a trail of originality.

The Choices We Make
We are each the sum total of the choices we have made to date. If we want a new reality, we have to make new choices. After all, the very definition of insanity is to do the same thing always and expect a different result. When we change our actions, we change our results.

A perfect case in point is my Godmother, Edith Head. At age thirty she was teaching French to an all girls school in California, and because she had studied a semester abroad in Europe the school assumed she could also teach art. She in fact couldn’t draw more than stick figures but took on the task. While looking in the paper one day, she saw a contest for drawing costumes for one of the major movie studios. Borrowing her student’s sketches she entered. And won! When showing up on the first day and being asked to draw, she was found out, but her courage and presumption so captivated the designer that he took her on and the rest is history including 8 Oscars for costume design over a 50-year career.

Life is in the Living
Life is in the living, not in the stuff. Stuff more often than not simply weighs us down and stands in our way. In order to move forward, to continue growing and changing, we must let things go. Those elements we keep with us must serve as inspiration and memories, not as baggage. What you bring forward is up to you.

When Mother passed some 20+ years ago now, we each had only a file folder of mementos that she had kept (I have two sisters). This was such a gift rather than what I see so often with clients and hordes of baby clothes, bronzed shoes, elementary school artwork projects most of us would soon forget, broken trophies from days gone by and too much more. Mother saved the best, the things that really counted to her and hence they mattered to us. What better gift. The most significant legacy she left was the memories of times spent together, not the stuff left behind. When you live from your heart and your mind, not by your hand and your purse, you will truly know that it is the connections and relationships that define us, not our possessions. He who dies with the most toys, still dies . . . .

Book Reviews

The War of Art, Stephen Pressfield
This book really gave me a kick in the butt! Pressfield nails out propensity to procrastinate and resist success and the realization of our own creative genius brilliantly. He is succinct, to the point, and uses personal examples to illustrate. No more excuses, because that is all they are. He details how resistance, our insidious road block, comes only from within and is there at every step. While many of us may know this, it is a wake-up call to see it in black and white and acknowledged by such a success. Pressfield also authored The Legend of Bagger Vance, The Gates of War and The Tides of Fire.

The Dress Doctor, Edith Head
I am reading Aunt Edie’s autobiography, but have been sidetracked by my travels. Please forgive me and I’ll review in the next ezine!

Movie Reviews

Rating system of one to five stars
5 Stars

"Failure to Launch" - Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew McConaughey, Kathy Bates, Terry Bradshaw, Zooey Deschanel
5 Stars
I think Parker is on target with her theory of how to capture a man. (Of course, I am not trying to capture one so not employing these winning wiles!) Bates and Bradshaw are the frustrated parents of thirty-something McConaughey who is still living very happily at home. And why not? With no rent to pay, his laundry taken care of, his meals cooked and generally any aspect of his life taken care of that is needed, why would anyone leave!? He hangs with a bunch of buddies in the same boat. While he dates regularly, as soon as anyone gets close he takes them home for a night and none are able to get past his living arrangement. Nothing like parents for relationship control. Enter Parker with a unique service guaranteed to unseat the errant son in 3 months, with the tried and true program of feigning interest in one of his pursuits, having an emotional crisis (I’ve never found this to work at all!), and letting him teach you something . . . and well, you’ll have to see the movie to learn more. It was light, fun, campy and a great cast. Deschanel steals her scenes and has a promising future. Bradshaw gets his “naked room” finally!

"Nanny McPhee" - Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Angela Lansbury, Kelly MacDonald
5 Stars
I had no idea Emma Thompson could at one time be so unappealing, but so winsome. She can! Firth is the beleaguered widow with too many children and no time for them. He has been put in the compromising position of needing money and support from his Aunt, brilliantly played by Lansbury. She in turn has forced him to promise to marry within thirty days or will cut him off and the children will be farmed out to foster care. Needless to say his pickings are very slim. His children are a rambunctious lot, rather entirely out of control, until the magical Nanny McPhee shows up. Her motto of “I will be here when you need me, but not when you want me. And I will go when you want me, but don’t need me” is quite real and right. The delightful housekeeper played by MacDonald weaves a bit of magic too. And best of all in this fairy tale, there is a happy ending. Yahoo!
