Dear Melissa,
Giving Thanks! Goodness the season
is truly almost upon us. How did it happen? I wasn’t
paying attention! I am astounded every year by how
early the holiday goodies come out, by the newest
latest greatest decorations and theme product. This
is the first year in many that I have missed the Atlanta
Mart cash and carry, but realizing that I have a
20x15 storage unit of nothing but holiday
decorations indicates I have enough!
Adventures Ahead! I am excited to
tell that just after Thanksgiving, when I have
managed to make my client’s homes comfortable for
their seasonal entertaining, that I am going to head
out to New Mexico for a speaker’s workshop. I can’t
wait; I am going to side trip to my folk’s former
home (when I was a mere tot of two). And just soak
up the Southwest ambiance and art. A week away can
only revive and rejuvenate! Look for details in the
next postcard.
Speaking Well! By the time you
read this, I’ll have had the pleasure of speaking at
the Home Show in Forest City, Iowa. They are not
far from Mason City and great grandfather had a
number of homes in the surrounding area. I am
attending a reception on Friday evening and then
speaking on three topics on Saturday. I am going
through Minneapolis, never been, and figured it is a
good excuse to see a friend.
Live well and beautifully, and enjoy a season of
friendship and family!

| Fresh Inspirations: Unique Possibilities in Creative Chair Ideas |
 |
|
It was a real treat recently to attend a
presentation class at Gwinnett Tech that had the
students each making a chair. They were all given
the same inspiration, a poem by Brian Andreas, one
of my favorites. Each came up with a completely
unique take on it. The only similarity was
generational with the class being somewhat split
between early twenties and those on a second career
path in their later thirties and forties. The older
the student, the more likely it seemed they would
produce a chair that spoke of how complex life
becomes and how many responsibilities there are to
juggle. It was really fascinating.
Each student had to make a chair, either from
scratch or they could use an existing and modify it
to fit their vision. These were considered art only
so sitting on it was not requisite. Materials were
unlimited and included plastic garden pots,
overalls, hammers, tatami matting, chinaware,
flatware, wind, water, and electricity. WOW, it was
like being in a designer candy store with so many
options.
Many of the participants explored a range of
unfamiliar tools and more for this project. From
jigsaws, to miters, sewing and upholstery, to
silicone adhesives, for yours truly who has never
hung wallpaper and believes life can be fixed with a
glue gun and staples, this was a wake up call! It
was quite impressive. I have included pictures here
of just a few of the entries (with over 20+ I
couldn’t possibly include everyone!).
Unfortunately due
to the instructor's family emergency, I was unable
to obtain the students' names and titles of the
chairs, but wanted to share
anyway! |

When the Wind Blows, James
Patterson
Okay, I’ll buy it . . . human experiments to create
a better, longer living being that has the side
benefit of flight?! Well this one was out there
even for me. Definitely loaded with suspense, a
healthy dose of romance, and even family values. Of
course it does make the scientific community out to
be coldly calculating and quite inhuman, and driven
almost exclusively by greed. But then somebody has
to be the bad guy. This actually reminded me of an
old movie starring Emannuelle Beart as an angel, who
is captured and unable to communicate . . . but that
is another story. This is reasonably spellbinding
and effectively page turning.
Home By Design, Sarah
Susanka
From the best selling author and architect of The
Not So Big House, Susanka continues her
revolutionary thinking in home design with this
guide to the 27 key concepts that can be applied to
any house to make it a home you’ve always wanted.
She has divided the book into three parts: space,
light, and order. Each detailed section is simple,
short and brilliantly illustrated with photographs.
The book can be perceived as a road map to creating
the home of your dreams. It isn’t about how much
space you have, but you do with it that truly
counts. I agree!

Rating system of one to five
stars

"Flight Plan" -
Jodie Foster, Peter Saarsgard, Sean Bean

I enjoy Foster so much more in movies of substance
and drama rather than mere hype and mystery. This
was very weak, predictable, sort of felt
beentheredonethat. Yes, she is in a state of shock
having just lost her husband, her daughter grieving as
well. Since she is a top notch aircraft
engineer/designer it makes sense she is flying on a
state of the art craft when her daughter seemingly
disappears. Yet she is forced to consider madness
as no one can verify her daughter’s existence. Of
course a maddened Mother is a force to be reckoned
with and Foster is not less than that. A dastardly
plot of greed and murder is uncovered and all is
made well. Sorry did I spoil it?? Don’t bother.
"In Her Shoes" -
Shirley MacLaine, Cameron Diaz, Toni Colette, Mark
Feuerstein

WOW! I loved this. Collette is fantastic, real, and
relatable as the ugly duckling that becomes the
swan. Her sister meanwhile, the sleep around Diaz,
learns the meaning of responsibility and the gift of
family. MacLaine makes it all possible and has only
gotten better with the years. Don’t miss it for
family, for friends, for anyone who has loved and
lost and loved again. This is heartwarming and gut
wrenching all in one.

| Trends: Color is Back!! |
 |
|
The beiging of America is now finally past and we
are afraid of color no more! Influenced by the baby
boomers desire to maintain their youthful vigor and
energy, there is an unwillingness to go gray.
Culturally the influx of Hispanics and Latinos and
their vivid sense of color and pattern have given
the trend a boost too.
It has only been in the last three years that color
outsold beige and whites for the first time in the
home. People are now grasping that color impacts
mood and to keep your spirits bright, you keep your
colors up! Color has also lost its vulgar perception
and is being translated into truly sophisticated
interiors and fashion.
So get over the beige, white is only primer. Lighten
up and color up!
